Adult Education and Diversity Programs
The Adult Education and Diversity Programs Department offers educational courses that impart knowledge, develop skills and clarify values for our students.  We provide our students quality programs that are unique in nature because they blend education with workplace skills and leisure.  Our programs assist adults gain the skills necessary to move into mainstream college programs and/or advance in the workforce.  Listed below are the programs and classes offered.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

There are four levels in our ESL program.  Students will commence their studies in the appropriate level based on an assessment test and increase their language development as they advance through the four levels.  Emphasis is placed on oral communication and conversational language.  After completing the fourth level, students are encouraged to enroll in credit ESL courses in the college.

CITIZENSHIP

This course prepares adults for the citizenship process, the INS examination and interview.  The course emphasizes oral communication and assists the strengthening of English language skills for those limited in English.  Classes are offered in Spanish and English.  In addition for a nominal fee of $10 we will assist students fill out the INS forms required to take the citizenship test.

VOCATIONAL ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (VESL)

The goal of our VESL program is to prepare community members for the workforce.  Accordingly, we have developed a bilingual program in collaboration with other departments in the college to assist the English Language Learner succeed in todays workplace.  VESL classes integrate English as a Second Language instruction with vocational content and addresses issues such as safety.  This enables the English Language Learner to learn English specific to his/her chosen career path and enables the student to simultaneously take entry level courses in that career path. Currently we offer VESL classes in Welding Technology, Pharmacy Clerk, Health, Machine Tool, Automotive Technician, Plastics and Computers.

GENERAL EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT 

The GED course will prepare students to take the battery of courses required to obtain their GED certificate.  The areas the course focuses on are language arts, writing, social studies, science, language arts- reading and mathematics.

OLDER WISER LEARNER (formerly Emeritus College)

The Older Wiser Learner program offers courses for older adults at various senior centers and sites in the community.  Courses include arts and crafts, exercise, music, quilting, chorus, creative writing, senior topics and self-management.  Seniors have an opportunity to interact with others in a classroom setting and participate in senior fairs within the community.
