Problems caused by traffic congestion worldwide has led to a high interest in the area of ITS.  Worldwide, traffic congestion has been increasing because of urbanization, or the shift of population from rural (outlying) areas to cities.  Population growth and changes in population density has resulted in increased vehicle traffic, leading to congestion.   Congestion reduces efficiency of our transportation infrastructure and increases travel time, air pollution, and fuel consumption.
