College Launches New Home Page!
Ten-Year Project Finally Completes -Interview Series Final
The last episode of the “behind-the-scene” of the new home page story series will talk about individual tabs and more new features especially for students.”
Campus Connection: “Let’s start with the content of each tab.”
Ty Bowman: “The academic calendar is a renewed effort by Public Affairs with help from ML Bettino and Academic Affairs to locate in one place all the dates important to students such as academic term beginning and ending dates, add/drop dates, final exam dates and school holiday closures. The academics tab at the top has a listing of all certificate, degree and transfer programs offered by the college. Links to all of the academic departments follow below that. The news tab expands the space on the home page allotted to campus news. Success Stories was renamed from My Story to be more descriptive and also given more space on the home page. The media tab samples some of the video currently available on our web.”
“Also, there is a mobile link at the top left which is meant for mobile devices. It simply removes all the page layout, graphics and styling except for inline images making it easier to read on a mobile device.
Campus Connection: “That’s very important. More and more students use mobile devices for emailing, web browsing and even to look for open classes.”
Samuel Chavez: “The search function now includes Google “KeyMatches” for the top 100 keywords based on statistical data over a one year span. Students are able to find information quickly using the “Student” column located on the left side of the page while first time visitors along with faculty and staff can use the “Campus Guide” column on the right to facilitate their search.”
Campus Connection: “That’s another neat feature for students!”
Ty Bowman: “We’ve made a huge stride in the right direction with this new home page. However, our audience is quick to point out their needs. One poignant remark from a survey respondent pointed out what probably should be on our to-do list for next year and the years beyond. The respondent wrote, “I think this is just the tip of the iceberg and is a nice starting point. But…a nice package doesn’t hide the mess below.” This person was referring to the organizational work and updates that need to be done to some of the faculty and departmental webs.
So keep your cards and letters coming. We want to hear from everyone and we certainly appreciate your interest. At the bottom of the new home page you can see a link to the home page survey. This is your chance to give your feedback. If you would like to see more specific data on any of our web research and statistics, please call or email me. Also, the College Committee on Web Standards is always open to the public and again I look forward to hearing from you.”
Campus Connection: “We use our home page without really paying attention to such details, or tend to take it for granted. But as you can see, our home page has been developed with meticulous care, extensive research and unbelievable amount of time and effort. We recommend you to go to the home page and check out all of the features that were mentioned in this interview themselves!”
