CACT offers industrial maintenance technician training to NUMMI dislocated workers
Cerritos College Centers for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) has partnered with North Orange County Community College District CACT, UAW-Labor Employment and Training Corporation (LETC), NUMMI Reemployment Center (NRC), Alameda County Workforce Investment Board (ALAWIB) and Sprinkler Fitters and Apprentices U.A. Local 483 to offer the industrial maintenance technician training for 16 NUMMI dislocated workers.
Industrial maintenance technician is one of the highest demand occupations in manufacturing. In this occupation, the employer relies on this individual to repair, install, adjust, and/or maintain building operations, or specific production and processing machinery or even refinery and pipeline distribution systems. Many employed in the field now are expected to retire in coming years, and employers have reported difficulty in recruiting workers with the necessary skills to be industrial maintenance technicians.
The 3-month, 196-hour training program had everything under one course. The trainning offers broad-based skills and practical hands-on experience in industrial math, industrial electricity, electric motors, air-conditioning basics, fluid power, power transmission, pumps in industry, piping systems, and welding basics. Students learned how to troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain industrial systems to industry standards.
Training was conducted at NUMMI Reemployment Center in Fremont, CA, and at Sprinkler Fitters and Apprentices U.A. Local 483 providing access to their welding stations. Besides a certificate of participation, each student received a training tool kits from the Alameda WIB valued at $1000.
Friends and families were invited to the graduation ceremony which was held on September 28, 2011. This training is funded by the California Community College Economic and Workforce Development (CCCEWD) program through the Job Development Incentive Fund (JDIF).
