Course Prerequisite FAQ

What are prerequisites?

A prerequisite is a course that must be completed with a “C” grade or better prior to registration in a specific course. Prerequisites are established by departments to ensure a student’s preparation and likely success in the course.

How do students meet prerequisites?

Prerequisites can be met with successful completion of an equivalent college level course, assessment test scores, a specific skill or a body of knowledge that the student possesses.

How can I make sure I get enrolled in the classes I need?

Plan ahead and keep the following tips in mind as you get ready to register. If you know whether prerequisites are required for your desired classes, and have a means of proving that you’ve met the prerequisites, this will save you time as you register. Complete the requisite clearance request and attach your proof.

Where do I find a list of prerequisites (if any) for my desired classes?

Prerequisites are listed in the schedule of classes and the college catalogue directly under the class title.

What if a prerequisite class is required for the class I want to take, but I didn’t complete the prerequisite at Cerritos College?

If a prerequisite is needed but you did not complete it at Cerritos College, choose one of the following appropriate options:

  • Take appropriate assessment tests at Cerritos College.

  • Bring transcripts from colleges other than Cerritos to show completion of courses or current enrollment (be sure to follow up with final grades once courses are completed).

  • Bring assessment test results with specific course recommendations from another college.

  • If you believe your skills, experience, or knowledge meet a course prerequisite, bring documentation such as a letter from your employer, or other records to the appropriate Division Dean's Office.

  • Print out a Requisite Clearance Request form and attach documentation.

  • Simply choose another course until the prerequisite can be met.

I don’t recall prerequisite checking for courses in the past. Is this a new procedure at the college?

Yes. Effective summer 2005, Falcon Phone and MyCerritos have strictly enforce completion of prerequisites.  Previous to this, classroom instructors checked prerequisites on the first day the class met.

Why does the college enforce proof of prerequisites?

Over the past several years, the college (and other colleges and universities) have noted a trend in successful completion of courses: the students who take prerequisites of classes first do far better in the class than students who don’t take the prerequisite classes. The college provides prerequisite courses for students’ own good. We want to make sure you succeed in your classes, and we provide a system that allows you to take classes in sequential order to ensure the most successful experience in each class.

What if I have questions about the prerequisites listed for the classes I want to take?

If you have questions about course prerequisites, please contact the Cerritos College Counseling Department at (562) 860-2451, ext. 2152 or stop by the “information desk” in the Administration Building.
