Instructional Offerings - Adapted Physical Education Courses

Note: Physical Education activity classes require appropriate attire; equipment is furnished unless noted. Students using locker room facilities must purchase a combination lock for security purposes. The lock number is recorded. Towels are furnished.

PEX 100 Sedentary Activities for Students with Disabilities    1.0 Unit

Recommendation: Completed adapted physical education physician health clearance for participation, adapted physical education health history questionnaire, intake interview assessment procedures.  This course is designed for the student who is not able to participate in virtually any physical activity course due to a disability. An individualized sedentary activity program will be tailored to the physical abilities and disabilities of the student. This course is not open to students who have received credit in PE 120.

Prior to enrolling in PEX 100, student must contact Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) in the Liberal Arts Building to complete a “Request for Certification of Physical Limitations”. PEX 101 Wheelchair Activities    1.0 Unit

Recommendation: Completed adapted physical education physician health clearance for participation, adapted physical education health history questionnaire, intake interview assessment procedures.

This course is designed to develop the general fitness level for the student who uses a wheelchair through a variety of modified sport activities. This course is not open to students who have received credit in PE 124.

PEX 102 Adapted Cardiovascular Exercise   1.0 Unit

Recommendation: Completed adapted physical education physician health clearance for participation, adapted physical education health history questionnaire, intake interview assessment procedures.

This course is designed to provide cardiovascular fitness training. Emphasis is on individual assessment, programming and selection of training methods including a variety of training options for wheelchair and non-wheelchair user. This course is not open to students who have received credit for PE 121.

PEX 103 Adapted Strength Training    1.0 Unit

Recommendation: Completed adapted physical education physician health clearance for participation, adapted physical education health history questionnaire, intake interview assessment procedures.

This course is designed for the student who is not able to participate in the standard circuit weight-training program due to a disability. An individualized weight-training program will be tailored to the physical abilities and disabilities of the student. This course is not open to students who have received credit in PE 122.

PEX 104 Adapted Stretching & Relaxation    1.0 Unit

Recommendation: Completed adapted physical education physician health clearance for participation, adapted physical education health history questionnaire, intake interview assessment procedures.

This course is designed for students with physical disabilities requiring an individualized exercise program of stretching and relaxation. Emphasis is on individual assessment, programming and selection of stretching and relaxation techniques to develop and improve flexibility, as well as promote relaxation. This course is not open to students who have received credit in PE 127.

PEX 105 Adapted Swimming    1.0 Unit

Recommendation: Completed adapted physical education physician health clearance for participation, adapted physical education health history questionnaire, intake interview assessment procedures.

This course is designed for the student who is unable to participate in a regular swimming course due to a disability. Improvement in basic swimming and water safety skills along with other pool activities such as hydroexercises and mobility activities will be included. This course is not open to students who have received credit in PE 123.
