This course teaches students the skills necessary to successfully complete a class on the Internet.  Topics include study skills, online student profiles, introduction to the Internet and the World Wide Web, using email and other online services, and basic aspects of word processing.  (1 unit)

EDT 51 - Email for Educators (Formerly EDT 6, EDT 57)

This course trains educators and prospective educators who wish to learn about email and how to incorporate email into the academic environment.  Participants will learn the fundamentals of email use and management techniques.  Emphasis is placed on email within the educational community.  Educational topics will include creating lesson plans that utilize email as part of an activity, netiquette, and issues surrounding student safety and security.  (1 unit)

This course trains educators and prospective educators in the use of the Microsoft Windows operating environment/system. Topics include desktop settings, file and print management, features of the Windows menu system, Windows attributes, and program management.  (1 unit)

This course is intended to teach educators how to use and teach KidPix, a popular software product for the K-6 learning environment.  Topics include creating desktop publishing projects, multimedia projects, and animation using KidPix.  Using the Internet and other resources, students will create lesson plans to incorporate into their curriculum.  (1 unit)

EDT 100 - Integration of the Internet Into Curriculum (Formerly EDT 3, EDT 11.1/ EDT 4, EDT 11.2)

This course is designed for educators who wish to learn about the Internet and how to incorporate the Internet into the classroom curriculum.  Participants will learn fundamental and advanced Internet search methods, email use and management, and techniques for setting up and using a website in the classroom.  A supportive learning community will be provided which educators collaborate to improve their skills in creating effective learning resources using suitable technologies. (2 units)

This course trains educators and prospective educators to use efficiently technology to perform administrative, instructional, and other classroom tasks using electronic spreadsheet software.  Spreadsheet-specific topics include the fundamentals of creating worksheets; formulas and functions; creating charts; using Wizards; techniques to manipulate large worksheets and multiple-sheet workbooks; and integration of spreadsheet software into course curriculum.   Other topics include impact of technology on education; past, current, and future technology trends; and copyright issues.  (2 units)

This course trains educators and prospective educators who wish to learn how to work with word processing documents as they prepare curriculum.  Participants will use basic and intermediate word processing functions to create administrative, instructional, and classroom management documents.  Word processing topics include creating, editing, saving, formatting, printing, spell checking, search, replace, headers and footers, footnotes and hyphenation, thesaurus, macros, merge, and outline functions.  Other topics include impact of technology on education; past, current, and future technology trends; and copyright issues.  (2 units)

This course trains educators and prospective educators who wish to learn how to work with Microsoft PowerPoint as a mode of teaching and as they prepare curriculum.  Participants will use basic and intermediate presentation graphic software functions to create administrative, instructional, and classroom management materials.  Topics include creating, managing, and delivering a multi-media curriculum-based presentation.  Students will produce conceptual and data-intensive presentations, create professional output for overheads, on-screen presentations, speaker notes, and support handouts incorporating text and graphics. Other topics include impact of technology on education; past, current, and future technology trends; and copyright issues.  (2 units)

This course is intended to develop the sensitivity as well as the skills and knowledge needed by teachers to create an educational environment that is conducive to learning for students with disabilities and for those who may have other learning challenges such as English second language learners.  Students will investigate strategies for differentiating instruction for students with learning and other disabilities within the general education environment.  Through lecture and hands-on experience, participants will explore practical uses of software that can be applied to classroom learning materials to make those materials more accessible to students needing assistance.  (2 units)

EDT 122 - Fundraising/Grant Writing for Educators

This course covers the basics of grant seeking, grant writing, and other forms of fundraising that will enable educators to obtain money for technology and other educational programs.  The course will cover the process, structure, and skills to develop a conceptual framework for fundraising research, planning, writing skills and strategies.  Budgetary considerations, budgetary planning, and presentation skills will also be addressed.   (2 units)

EDT 132 - Digital Music in the Classroom

This course covers the use of digital communication in education by creating and using digital music and other audio in the classroom using audio editing software.  Using digital music, students will learn to create, perform, and record original music for digital movies, podcasts, and slideshows; capture streaming audio; and to capture and assess oral readings.  (2 units)

This course covers the concepts and techniques for video editing using Apple’s iMovie and/or Microsoft Movie Maker in education.  Using these free movie editing software packages, students will learn to bring lessons to life by creating video “reports” to demonstrate abstract concepts through narration, video, music, and pictures.  Methods of integrating these software programs into new and existing lesson plans will be explored.    (2 units)

EDT 150 - Podcasting in Education

This course covers the concepts and techniques for creating web-based broadcasting, called podcasts, for educational purposes and making them available on the Internet.  Podcasting is a way to post and distribute electronic media files online.  Podcasting content, resources, hardware and software requirements, and procedures will be covered in addition to methods of integrating podcasts into educational course content.  (2 units)
