EMERGENCY MEDICALTECHNICIAN-I 3 UNITS
Class hours: 3 lecture
Prerequisite: Current CPR for Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association
Corequisite: HO 9L
This course is designed to teach the student the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform pre-hospital emergency care. The didactic portion will present various Basic Life Support (BLS) assessment tools that are included in the Emergency Medical Technician - I (Basic) scope of practice. Areas of instruction include scene and physical patient assessment, and the proper utilization of emergency medical equipment. The information presented will assist in the development of critical thinking skills required to complete a systematic and nationally standardized approach to caring for the ill and injured patient. Successful candidates in HO 9 and HO 9L will be eligible for verification of course completion. The combination of HO 9 and HO 9L meets the didactic, certifying skills exam, and clinical experiences set forth in the California Code of Regulations for Emergency Medical Technician hours of instruction. Additional testing and certification process is required to use the name Emergency Medical Technician-I or Basic. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times and does not guarantee state certification.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN I LAB 2 UNITS
Class hours 3 lab and 3 hours of arranged field experience.
Prerequisite: Completion of current immunization requirements for affiliating clinical agencies.

Areas of instruction include scene and physical patient assessment, safe and proper utilization of equipment, and hospital and ambulance clinical experience. Successful candidates in HO 9 and HO 9L will be eligible for verification of course completion. The combination of HO 9 and HO 9L meets the didactic, certifying skills exam, and clinical experiences set forth in the California Code of Regulations for Emergency Medical Technician hours of instruction. Additional testing and certification process is required to use the name Emergency Medical Technician-1or Basic. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times and does not guarantee state certification. Uniform will be required.
