Shakespeare meets Starbucks
Thinking about becoming an English major? Just read a great book or see a great film and want to talk about it? Interested in what careers are available to English majors? The English department offers Shakespeare meets Starbucks, a program for students who want to talk with an English professor outside of the classroom. Students and professors are treated to free Starbucks coffee at the campus cafe, and they have a chance to chat about whatever the student would like to discuss. Interested? Ask your English professor about the program, or contact Lydia Alvarez at ext. 2838.

Common Novel:
Cormac McCarthy's The Road
Each year, faculty choose a common novel to be taught in many introductory writing classes. This year's common novel: Cormac McCarthy's The Road.

Look for upcoming information on discussion groups and presentations on McCarthy's novel during fall 2008. An earlier McCarthy novel, No Country for Old Men, was released as a film starring Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones in 2008. A film version of The Road is in production and stars Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Robert Duval.

Visiting Writers
In spring 2008, the English Department hosted a week-longphoto of book "Burro Genius" by Victor Villasenor writer-in-residence program with Victor Villaseñor, author of several memoirs including Rain of Gold and Burro Genius. The author worked with student writing groups and presented readings for the college community.
