Writing Center Tutors' Schedule

English 33 is a half-unit, credit/no credit, open entry/open exit course that provides students with access to tutors in the Writing Center.  It is designed to provide assistance for students for any writing needs: philosophy, sociology, fine arts, earth science, personal statements, job applications--any writing needs! Check the current schedule of classes for section numbers. Students may enroll up until the 17th week of the semester.

Goal: The main goal of English 33 and the Writing Center is to help students learn how to become more effective and confident writers.

Purpose: The assistance students receive from Writing Center staff and the revision work students do as a result is important to their success as a writers.  This help will give students additional opportunity, over and above their class work, to improve their writing.

What The Writing Center Can Do to Help a Student:

  • Generate ideas for writing assignments
  • Clarify the purpose and structure of a paper
  • Fully develop a student's idea
  • Make writing more clear and understandable
  • Identify grammar problems
  • Use writing reference sources
  • Develop the writing process (and thus a student's confidence)
  • Provide instruction in correct format, including MLA
  • Evaluate non-course writing such as resumes, letters, or assignments for other classes

What The Writing Center Cannot Do:

  • Proofread, edit, or otherwise "correct" students' papers for them
  • Choose students' topics for them
  • Dictate what students should write
  • Guarantee students a better grade
  • Type students' papers for them
  • Tell students what their teacher "wants" from them
  • Provide much in the way of useful assistance if students show up an hour before a paper is due
  • Read more than one paper per session
