Foundation Scholarships -- Health Care

Marijean Piorkowski Scholarship (FALL) 

The Marijean Piorkowski Scholarship was established to recognize the many years of service of long time faculty member and program chair, Marijean Piorkowski.

To be eligible for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a 2nd year student in the physical therapist assistant program
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75

Annual Award (1) $500 


Mark and Barnett Chen Physical Therapist Assistant Scholarship (FALL) 

The Mark and Barnett Chen Scholarship aims to encourage and assist compassionate and outstanding students in the physical therapy assistant education programs to complete theireducation so that they may enhance the quality of health care services in the community. This scholarship was established in 2009 in memory of Mr. Chen who himself devoted muchof his life to the health care field. It also honors his wife, Barnett, who dedicated her life to the care of others.

To be eligible for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a 2nd year student in the physical therapist assistant program
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75

Annual Award (1) $500 

Mark and Barnett Chen Nursing Scholarship (SPRING) 

The Mark and Barnett Chen Scholarship aims to encourage and assist compassionate and outstanding students in the nursing program to complete their education so that they mayenhance the quality of health care services in the community. This scholarship was established in 2009 in memory of Mr. Chen who himself devoted much of his life to the health carefield. It also honors his wife, Barnett, who dedicated her life to the care of others. 

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in the nursing program
  • Be a continuing student (minimum 2nd semester student)
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75

Annual Award (1) $500 

Pill Cho Healthcare Research Scholarship (SPRING)

Established by Cerritos College Trustee, Dr. Tina Cho, in memory of her father, Dr. Pill Jay Cho Research and the Cho Family Scholarship are awarded to outstanding students pursuing a career in healthcare.Dr. Pill Jay Cho was a professor of sociology and former Dean of the School of Social Work at Grambling State University. He passed away from pancreatic cancer in September 1998.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Intend on transferring to a four year college or university
  • Intend on pursuing a career in healthcare research
  • Academic achievement and need will be considered

Annual Award (1) $500

Cho Family Scholarship (SPRING)

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Intend on transferring to a four year college or university
  • Healthcare focused major such as mental health worker, nursing, pre-med, dental, etc.
  • Desire to serve the underserved populations
  • Involvement in Project Hope
  • Academic achievement and need will be considered

Annual Award (1) $500

DeLyre Dental Assisting Scholarship (FALL)

Established by Dr. Wolf DeLyre, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in the Dental Assisting Program. 

Annual Award (2) $500; Faculty Selected

Jack Hoekzema Medical Assisting Scholarship (SPRING)

Established in memory of Dr. Jack Hoekzema, a physician from Bellflower who was a dedicated and generous supporter of Cerritos College and the Foundation. To be eligible for thisscholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in the Medical Assisting Program
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0

Annual Award $300 

Pat Pinder Scholarship (FALL)

Established in memory of Pat Pinder, long-time faculty member in the Health Occupations Division, former Faculty Senate President, and Director of the Student Health and WellnessCenter. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students in the Health Occupations Division.  To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a declaredHeath Occupations major
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Must have completed 12 units within the major

Annual Award up to $300

Ina Zive Dental Hygiene Scholarship (SPRING)

Established in honor of retired professor and Department Chair, Dr. Ina Zive. This scholarship is awarded to students already enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program who have alreadypassed both first semester clinical and academic courses.  

Annual Award up to $400; Faculty Selected
