Foundation Scholarships -- Health Care

Marijean Piorkowski Scholarship (FALL) 

The Marijean Piorkowski Scholarship was established to recognize the many years of service of long time faculty member and program chair, Marijean Piorkowski.

To be eligible for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a 2nd year student in the physical therapist assistant program
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75

Annual Award (1) $500; General Scholarship Application 


Mark and Barnett Chen Physical Therapist Assistant Scholarship (FALL) 

The Mark and Barnett Chen Scholarship aims to encourage and assist compassionate and outstanding students in the physical therapy assistant education programs to complete theireducation so that they may enhance the quality of health care services in the community. This scholarship was established in 2009 in memory of Mr. Chen who himself devoted muchof his life to the health care field. It also honors his wife, Barnett, who dedicated her life to the care of others.

To be eligible for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a 2nd year student in the physical therapist assistant program
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75

Annual Award (1) $500; General Scholarship Application

The Mark and Barnett Chen Scholarship aims to encourage and assist compassionate and outstanding students in the nursing program to complete their education so that they mayenhance the quality of health care services in the community. It also honors his wife, Barnett, who dedicated her life to the care of others. 

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in the nursing program
  • Be a continuing student (minimum 2nd semester student)
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75

Annual Award (1) $500; General Scholarship Application 

Norwalk Lions Club Project Hope Scholarship (FALL)

Established by the Norwalk Lions Club, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student involved in Project Hope. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Must live or have attended high school in the City of Norwalk
  • Must have community involvement or participation in clubs, student government or volunteer work (including Project Hope)

Annual Award (1) $500; General Scholarship Application

DeLyre Dental Assisting Scholarship (FALL)

Established by Dr. Wolf DeLyre, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in the Dental Assisting Program. 

Annual Award (2) $500; Faculty Selected

Jack Hoekzema Medical Assisting Scholarship (SPRING)

Established in memory of Dr. Jack Hoekzema, a physician from Bellflower who was a dedicated and generous supporter of Cerritos College and the Foundation. To be eligible for thisscholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in the Medical Assisting Program
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0

Annual Award $300; Applications available in the Medical Assisting Office at the beginning of every Spring semester.

Pat Pinder Scholarship (FALL)

Established in memory of Pat Pinder, long-time faculty member in the Health Occupations Division, former Faculty Senate President, and Director of the Student Health and WellnessCenter. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students in the Health Occupations Division.  To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a declared Heath Occupations major
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Must have completed 12 units within the major

Annual Award up to $300; General Scholarship Application

Project Hope Scholarship Application - online application (SPRING) - Application available January 23 - February 23, 2015

All candidates for the Project HOPE Scholarship Program must attend a mandatory Project HOPE Scholarship Application Orientation to be able to apply for a 2015-2016 Project HOPE scholarship. To see the dates, times, and locations of the orientations, please download a copy of the January and February Project HOPE calendars by visiting the Project HOPE website (www.cerritos.edu/hope) and clicking on the "Calendar of Events" link in the "Department Links" column on the left side of the  page. Applicants must only attend one of the scheduled orientations. Any applications submitted by candidates who did not attend an orientation will not be reviewed.

Project HOPE Transfer Scholarship:

  • Registered in at least 6 units at Cerritos College
  • Must be ready to transfer to a four-year university or enter into a professional health-related program by Fall 2015
  • Must provide proof of acceptance and full-time enrollment in a four-year college/university or health professional program to receive a scholarship

Award: Up to $2500

Dennis Schechinger Memorial Scholarship (SPRING)

Established by Chemistry Professor Dr. Linda Waldman in memory of her father, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding science major with financial need who meets the following criteria:

  • Chemistry, Biology, Physics or 2nd Year Nursing majors
  • Minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Veteran (Active or with Honorable Discharge)

Annual Award (1) $500; General Scholarship Application

Ina Zive Dental Hygiene Scholarship (SPRING)

Established in honor of retired professor and Department Chair, Dr. Ina Zive. This scholarship is awarded to students already enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program who have alreadypassed both first semester clinical and academic courses.  

Annual Award up to $400; Faculty Selected
