Cerritos College Metals Building

Completed Project

Purpose of Project

The Division of State Architect (DSA) evaluated the District’s facilities in 1995/96 for conformance with minimum seismic standards for the performance of structures in earthquake conditions. The DSA evaluation led to a document entitled the “California Community Colleges Seismic Survey Report and Recommendations”, dated April 1998.  In the report, buildings were graded with regard to their performance during seismic activity.

The Metal Trades building is graded “F” (seismic risk level 6) in the Seismic Survey Report by the Division of the State Architect.  This rating is for “Conditions or deficiencies observed that require further investigation to evaluate life-safety concerns for the performance of the building in moderate earthquake ground motions.”   This building is located in seismic zone 4.

The project consists of structural system seismic retrofit of an existing 21,607-asf one story framed building. This building is 49 years old and was constructed in 1961. In order to access the structure, removal and replacement of existing architectural, mechanical and electrical finishes and systems will be necessary.
