New Southland Cerritos Center For Transportation Technology

Basis of Design

This new single story building to be constructed at the southeast corner of the Auto Tech Complex will be a unique facility serving three separate groups. These groups include Cerritos College, Northwood University and an industry group known as the Southland Motor Car Dealers Association. This facility will provide classrooms and offices for both Cerritos and Northwood University. The Southland Motor Car Dealers Association will use the classrooms and meeting rooms in this facility to provide continuing training for the employees of its members as well as meetings and new vehicle model presentations. It is envisioned that this will give the students exposure to the real life experiences of their chosen profession and perhaps provide an opportunity for student placement within the industry.

Discussion:

The building will feature an exhibit space large enough for the display of a vehicle and an area for a group of students or industry members to view the vehicle up close. This important space will face and occupy the prominent southeast corner of the site. As this exhibit area will be approximately 3 feet above the existing grade at the corner of the site, a ramp will be constructed to allow vehicles to be driven into the exhibition space. This will also serve as the accessible path of travel to the front entrances of the building.

This building will be constructed as a Type II non rated building utilizing a structural steel frame and lateral resisting brace frames. Interior and exterior walls will be framed using nonbearing lightweight steel studs. The roof structure will be constructed of structural steel deck covered with a light colored heat reflecting roof. Walls and attic areas will be insulated with fiberglass batts. Interior walls and ceilings in certain areas will be sheathed with 5/8” gypsum board. Other ceilings will be constructed of suspended acoustical panels. The exterior sheathing of the building will be a combination of metal panels and plaster cement. Glazed areas will be constructed of green tinted, heat absorbing insulated glass units supported in an aluminum storefront system. The exhibit area has been designed with a large uninterrupted glazed area to allow display of vehicles and allow for easy identification of the buildings use. This glazed area will be shaded with horizontal sun screens to reduce the heat loads.

Multi-zone roof top gas/electric package units will provide heating and cooling throughout the building. The toilet rooms will be constructed to current ADA and Title 24 requirements.

Compliance with Campus Standards:

The new SCCTT Building will be designed to comply with the requirements and recommendations of the approved Final Draft Campus Standards Handbook, dated January 18, 2007. The building will also comply with the Space Allocation Standards as required by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office.
