What is Machine Tool Technology?
The application of scientific and technical knowledge with materials science, mechanical principles, and computer programming in order to efficiently use machines as tools to cut metallic and non-metallic materials to make components for any application, whether they are consumer products, automotive or aerospace components, or medical devices.
What would students learn?
Students will learn blueprint reading, shop mathematics (including algebra, geometry, basic trigonometry), industrial safety, setup and operation of various machines (drill presses, lathes, mills), and the programming, setup, and operation of computerized numerical control (CNC) machines. Additionally, they will learn to use computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software for advanced programming. There are also classes in robotic programming and operation. Further, students will learn computerized inspection and reverse engineering.
Recommendation of skillset prior to education
Students are recommended to have a mechanical aptitude, critical thinking skills, willingness to learn, the ability to follow instructions, and a meticulous attention to detail.
What type of careers they can have with the MTT background?
Graduating students can work as machine operators, machinists, tool and die makers, CNC programmers, or quality control inspectors.
Why is it important in society?
This field is integral to the American economy, machine tool technologists are always needed to produce close tolerance and high quality components for U.S. companies to remain competitive in the global economy. Current machine tool workers in advanced manufacturing industries are retiring in large numbers, so the demand for replacements is high.
