Martha Robles

Martha Robles is the oldest of nine brothers and sisters. Born in Sonora, Mexico, she migrated as a young child to California in the early 1960s with her family, looking for better opportunities. After a few years, however, immigration standards were tightened and the borders were closed. The family applied for documentation and waited three years to return to the U.S. legally. Manuel Lopez

Manuel Lopez

Manuel Lopez came to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of 16 with his parents and two brothers. He didn't speak English, and so he took ELD classes as a junior and senior at San Gabriel High School. Lopez knew as soon as he arrived from Mexico that he wanted to stay in school. After he finished high school, Lopez knew he wasn't yet ready for the university. Angel Ramirez, a film major at Cerritos College , recently landed two industry internships, one with the California Film Commission, and another with Fox 11 TV News for the summer. Celena Murillo, a re-entry student at Cerritos College, was recently awarded a $500 scholarship from the Long Beach Legal Secretaries Association. Murillo, 26, of Cerritos, plans to become a court reporter. She originally became interested in this occupation when she heard about it during a career day at her high school.
