We are English department faculty providing writing assistance to Cerritos College students. We are here to serve anyone who wishes to develop his or her writing skills. We love to assist students with writing, and we enjoy the challenge of working with a diversity of students on a wide range of writing projects. And we invite the opportunity to collaborate with all faculty in expanding the use of writing across the curriculum. |
The New Writing Resource Center is a project developed by the English Department and spearheaded by Professor Suzanne Ashe. Initiated in the Spring 2001 semester, the Center has served hundreds of students taking courses across the curriculum, helping them to achieve their academic, personal, and career goals. Besides one-on-one feedback and guidance with their class assignments, students have gotten help with writing resumes and application letters for university transfer, scholarships, and even medical school.
Students who use the Center's services consistently learn to write more powerfully and effectively in the classes they take. Knowing that our help is available, they claim, has encouraged them to complete difficult courses and to reach for the highest possible academic goals in them. In addition, they persist in the completion of AA degrees and certificates, as well as moving on to transfer institutions. They also report personal satisfaction in finding that, with diligence and direction, they can indeed write college-level papers with success.
We support the ongoing “conversation” about teaching and learning at this institution. As a result, we have collaborated with faculty across the campus regarding writing projects specific to their disciplines. Through our staff development workshops, sponsored by the Innovation Center, we offer teaching resources and strategies designed to address student writing in every discipline.
