Cerritos College hired Nancy Montgomery as the new Coordinator of Student Health Services during its regular board meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

photo of Nancy Montgomery standing outsideMontgomery has an extensive background in community service, particularly in underserved communities. She has helped raise the health standards in these areas by acquiring grants to create educational programs, inform community members of healthcare enrollment options, and open clinics providing medical and dental services. She also has served on several boards in an effort to raise awareness of breast health care and domestic violence prevention. For her many efforts, Montgomery was named the Nurseweek “Nurse of the Year” in 2000. She also received the Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award in 2000, and was honored by the office of Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard in Washington D.C. for outstanding service in an underserved area.

Montgomery worked as a registered nurse at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Anaheim for over 14 years, where her specialties were obstetrics, home health and education.

One of Montgomery’s goals at Cerritos College is to educate students on the superiority of prevention to treatment. She plans to bring to campus speakers and lecturers on health issues from various healthcare organizations to improve the education of the students and faculty regarding their own healthcare. Another of her goals is starting support groups for students who struggle with alcohol, obesity, and addictions. Finally, Montgomery desires to push for healthier food choices and increased activity for students on campus.

Montgomery is an alumna of Cerritos College, having studied to be an LVN and RN on the campus some twenty years ago. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing education from CSU Dominguez Hills.

Cerritos College serves as a comprehensive community college for southeastern Los Angeles County.
