WHAT: Cerritos College’s Black Student Union will present “Seasoning for the Soul” an event honoring Black History Month, on Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m. in the Cerritos College Student Center, located at 11110 Alondra Boulevard in Norwalk. This year’s event is centered around health issues and presidential election.
Stephen Johnson, the Vice President/Assistance Superintendent of Student Services will be opening the event. Two guest speakers Dr. Eugene Krank, a retired podiatrist, and Mr. Michael Wade, a respiratory therapist at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital, will be exploring health issues including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and sickle cell.
A fashion show and a steppe team will feature elementary, middle school and high school students as well as Cerritos College students and staff. A student from Norwalk High and a junior high school student in Norwalk, representing Obama and Clinton respectively, will perform a political skit. The mothers of students on campus that plays a strong part in their student life, the staff and people that have contributed to the Black History Month program will be honored during the event.

The Black History program has involved and honored individuals within the Cerritos College community as well as within those neighborhoods surrounding the college. The variety of activities planned and executed over the years have included local elementary, middle and high school levels; resulting in an effectual marketing endeavor. These marketing endeavors have introduced future students to the college campus and educational options. Cerritos college students involved in the planning, organizing and implementation of the programs have experientially acquired hands on training and practice. The skills learned are not only transferable to other areas of their lives yet reflect the Cerritos Community College’s value-based educational commitment to the success of its learners. The networking opportunities have created a greater awareness within the community of Cerritos College’s commitment to recognize and honor diversity within its student and faculty bodies. The local business community continues to contribute various products, services as well as support for this annual event in light of their commitment to social responsibility. While the program involves one evening out of 365 (366, leap year) it continues to engender a sense of pride and critical historical recognition designed to teach invaluable lessons of tenacity, endurance, responsibility and accountability through the lives of great Americans.
