NORWALK, Calif. - March 4, 2009 - Cerritos College was one of five colleges that participated in an invitational, national policy forum in San Antonio, Texas on February 24th. Nick Real, chair of the Machine Tool Technology program, and Nick Kremer, executive dean of Community, Industry and Technology, represented the college.
The forum, Building Tomorrow’s Workforce, was organized by the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce (CSW), the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE), and Excellencia—a Washington, DC based policy group. The effort is funded by the Lumina Foundation. The purpose of the forum was to identify best practices which promote the education of Latino workers through community college/workplace partnerships in manufacturing. The meeting was a follow up to a CSW national study conducted last year that identified these five college/workplace partnerships.
The Cerritos program selected is a partnership among the Southeast Area Social Services Funding Agency, the college’s Machine Tool program and Economic Development Department. The partners conducted a retraining program for workers laid off from local manufacturing firms. The 200 hour training emphasized technical skills, English language development, and interviewing.
The study is prompted by the need to strengthen the long term viability of the workforce by improving the educational and skill level of adult Hispanic immigrants. These immigrants are estimated to make up nearly 15% of the national civilian labor force by 2014.
Cerritos College serves as a comprehensive community college for southeastern Los Angeles County. Communities within the college’s district include Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hawaiian Gardens, La Mirada, Norwalk, and portions of Bell Gardens, Lakewood, Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs and South Gate. Cerritos College offers degrees and certificates in more than 180 areas of study in nine divisions. Annually, more than 1,200 students successfully complete their course of studies, and enrollment currently surpasses 24,000 students. Visit Cerritos College online at www.cerritos.edu.
