Welcome from the Dean
Welcome to the Division of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) of Cerritos College, and I am happy you are interested in learning more about us. The disciplines of biology, chemistry, computer and information sciences, earth science, mathematics, and physics/astronomy are fascinating subjects and fundamental to the future of our society. We provide a wide variety of academically rigorous programs and courses that help students transfer to 4-year universities or prepare for careers, as well as basic skills courses and courses for personal enhancement.
Our energetic and innovative faculty members promote active learning in ways that take advantage of our two new buildings that have excellent, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, modern technology, outdoor learning areas on campus and interesting local field trips. In addition to conveying scientific and mathematical concepts and providing preparation in modern experimental techniques, our courses emphasize critical thinking and excellent communication skills, in order to prepare students to use what they have learned as professionals and as citizens.
We are committed to student success, and the faculty often show their enthusiasm for their discipline through their interactions with students outside of the classroom. They are involved in student activities, like the Math Club, Astronomy Club, and Environmental Club. They encourage participation in our research program for biology and chemistry students at UC Irvine and CSU Long Beach (Bridges to the Baccalaureate) and at the University of Southern California. The Computer and Information Sciences department offers work experience internships with local businesses and government agencies. A program for students interested in health careers, Project HOPE, provides academic support, workshops, career advising, community service opportunities, and leadership development.
I am confident that our faculty and staff can provide you with the educational experience you need and the personal support to help you attain your educational and career goals.
