Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the division of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) of Cerritos College. I am happy you are interested in learning more about the courses and programs we offer. Our division offers courses in the disciplines of biology, chemistry, computer and information sciences, earth science, mathematics, and physics/astronomy. These subjects help to explain the world around us, and are fundamental to the future of our society. We provide a wide variety of academically rigorous programs and courses that help students transfer to 4-year universities or prepare for careers, as well as basic skills courses and courses for personal enhancement.

Our energetic and innovative faculty members promote active learning in ways that take advantage of our two new buildings and our excellent, state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. A new building which will house mathematics and our computer and information sciences is under construction right now.

Many of our science classes also use outdoor learning areas on campus and take interesting local field trips. Coursework in the SEM Division will teach you scientific and mathematical concepts and open your eyes to our natural world. Mathematics will teach you to think in new ways. You will learn modern experimental techniques and how to think critically. The skills you develop by taking coursework in the SEM Division will prepare you to transfer to a university and help you become a scientifically-literate citizen.

We are committed to student success, and the faculty often show their enthusiasm for their discipline through their interactions with students outside of the classroom. They are involved in student activities, like the Math Club, Astronomy Club, Environmental Club and the Wilderness Club.

The science programs at Cerritos College also participate with UC Irvine, CSU Long Beach and the University of Southern California to offer students a variety of paid summer research opportunities. The Computer and Information Sciences Department offers work experience internships with local businesses and government agencies.

Our program for students interested in health careers, Project HOPE (health opportunities and pipeline to education), provides academic support, workshops, career advising, community service opportunities, and leadership development.

Our faculty and staff will provide you with the educational experience, and personal support you need to help you attain your educational and career goals. Our classes are rigorous and require hard work, persistence, and time, but students who invest in their coursework are rewarded with knowledge that will aid them as they move on with their academic careers or professions. I wish you success as you pursue your educational goals at Cerritos College.
