OVERVIEW

Website history and system changes:

a. Cerritos College was the first California community college in California to connect to the Internet. The Cerritos.edu domain was activated on October 19, 1989. The first web server went live in late 1990. The College started its website around 1993. The oldest archived record for www.cerritos.edu is November 20, 1996.

b. IT managed and authored the College’s website until January, 1999 when the College’s Web Administrator (Ty Bowman) was hired.

c. Fine Arts and Communication provided the College’s first division design in 1998 and implemented it in 1999. The Web Standards Committee assisted with additional designs.

d. The College officially updated its website in 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2015.

e. Over the last 12 years (2003- 2015), the website was divided into two systems:

  1. Initially, in 1999 web authors used Microsoft FrontPage, which had issues with standards, design, training and usability.
  2. The Web Administrator developed a custom web platform in 2003 to address growing issues with design standards, including web accessibility and usability. The Web Administrator invested in Ephox EditLive WYSIWYG editor ($5,530) in 2006 and Xstandard plugin ($800).
  3. The College also had 3,500 pages in SharePoint, which had the same issues with standards, design, training and usability leftover from FrontPage.

  • October 4, 2016: Added safety alerts in OU Campus for the home page

    • Encoded emails added to the employees directory
    • Communicated to SharePoint users regarding migration to OU Campus
  • January 5, 2017:
    • Calendar authors recruited for 20 of 27 categories
    • All 13,459 pages migrated from CMS to OU Campus or deleted (100%)
    • Email server permissions configured for contact forms
    • Development servers require PHP/MySQL installed for calendar and LDP Forms and default pages configured to enable aliases
    • 190 of 260 web authors trained (73%)
    • Creation of new webpages from SharePoint is 6 of 76 (6%)
    • New page template created for encoded emails forms
    • New page template created for navigation menus
  • February 10, 2017:
    • OmniUpdate to install Helios calendar (includes PHP/MySQL)

  • July 20, 2017:
    • Discussion web content reduction and revision
  • August 10, 2017:
    • Convert the approved mockups into web-ready templates for hand-off to OmniUpdate
  • November 6, 2017:
    • OmniUpdate begins migration process by staging the content on the development servers with the new templates
    • OU Campus begins theming Daily Falcon and campus calendar
  • November 16, 2017:
    • OmniUpdate completes full migration process with the new templates
    • Web content currently being re-written, organized
  • November 20-27, 2017:
    • Test post-migrated web content into new system (Web Admin)
