WOODSHOP NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 2009
Welcome, Fellow Woodworking Students!
Our CSAW slogan for 2009-2010 is “It’s the Year to Volunteer!” As you are well aware, the budget cuts have impacted our department in many ways that are immediately visible: Fewer aides, teachers, classes. And we’ve all been told that there may even be more cuts on the horizon.
However, the friendly spirit of this department is one of its greatest assets. There is a profound sense of community here. Much of the shop was built by students and staff members who volunteered their time and talents to construct workbenches, cabinetry and many of the fixtures you see around the shop.
We’d like to stoke that “Sure, I can!” attitude so that together we can improve our shop and our program despite these budget cuts. You’ve already given us lots of ideas for programs you’d like us to sponsor, merchandise you’d like to see in the vending machines, wood you’d like to see in the lumber room, equipment you’d like us to purchase for the shop. And you’d like CSAW tee-shirts with pockets!
However, we need your help to implement these ideas. So please keep checking the bulletin board for volunteer opportunities—and sign up!
Kicking off this community spirit were those who volunteered to be CSAW class reps. Here’s a big THANK YOU to all of you!
So keep putting your suggestions in our Suggestion Box …..and keep putting your name on our Volunteer Sheets…..YOU ARE APPRECIATED!!!!
Thanks!
Marci Crestani, CSAW President

POSSIBLE MID-YEAR CUT TO AFFECT SPRING CLASS OFFERINGS. HOW YOU CAN HELP.
As you already know, the state of California is suffering from an ongoing budget crisis that has caused deep cuts within our program. Thus far, we have reduced the number of course offerings, eliminated the weekend program, and laid-off half of our instructional aide staff. Spending has also been dramatically curtailed making it difficult to run the program efficiently.
Many, including our administrators, speculate that a mid-year cut around November is on the horizon. If this happens, additional class sections will be extracted from the spring schedule. We are told that classes will be eliminated based on enrollment numbers, even before the semester starts!
To avoid future decrement, we are encouraging EVERYONE to sign up for classes as soon as possible after your registration appointment. Also, we request that you plan ahead and handle the following items by the end of October to prevent future registration issues.
Registration appointments are scheduled to start November 19 and appointment information will be available on MyCerritos as early as November 1. A draft of the spring schedule is available online at http://cms.cerritos.edu/woodworking/schedule. We are looking forward to seeing next semester and thank you for all your support during this trying time.
CASTLE POCKET SCREW MACHNE ACQUIRED BY CSAW
CSAW is committed to improving the program and it shows. Just recently, the club purchased a new Model TSM-21 Castle Pocket Screw Machine for all to use! The tool is set-up for ¾” material using 1¼” pocket screws and can be found in the cabinet lab at the south end of the shop. A special thanks to those who continue to purchase materials and supplies from the club.
SECURITY SYSTEM CATCHES THIEF
At the close of the spring semester in May, a student reported that her 5 x 5 sheet of Baltic birch was missing. She had just seen it several days earlier. A scan of the area with our new security system resulted in the identification of the thief. The issue was turned over to Campus Police and Judicial Affairs. The victim decided not to press charges, but the thief now has a hold on his records and must report to Judicial Affairs prior to returning to the college. He has not attended classes since the incident.
More recently, another thief was caught on tape stealing a backpack from room WD-14. As of this writing, he has not been identified. He is not a woodworking student, but was passing by the open door of the bench lab when he saw an opportunity.
Our thanks go out to CSAW for helping to fund the security system.
