As the son of a custom homebuilder who is both an architect and builder, Erik’s very first paying job was as a construction laborer for the family business. Through high school he worked summers as a carpenter’s helper. After apprenticing for two years Erik worked his way up to a journeyman carpenter.

After receiving his B.A. at New York University, Erik returned to Seattle to build custom homes with his father. Eventually he went out on his own working variously as a general contractor, finish carpenter and cabinetmaker.

Today he runs a custom shop where he designs and builds staircases and built-in architectural millwork along with occasional furniture pieces and cabinetry. Erik’s work is appreciated as functional works of art.

Thinking of himself as a living link in an unbroken chain of skill and knowledge reaching back for many generations, teaching is his way of forging the next link in the chain – his way of returning what he has borrowed.
