Before teaching full-time at Cerritos College Carl Stammerjohn operated a one-man custom furniture shop for six years. He did mostly commission work, occasionally creating spec pieces when time permitted. Prior to his career in woodworking, he worked as a math teacher and mechanical engineer.
Stammerjohn earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly, SLO and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics at Cal State Dominguez. He has also taken numerous woodworking courses and seminars at The Cutting Edge, Cerritos College, and various woodworking shows.
Stammerjohn teaches a variety of courses including WMT 101 Intro to Woodworking, WMT 102 Intro to Casegoods, WMT 103 Intro to Tables, WMT 201 Handtools, WMT 202 Advanced Furniture Casegoods, WMT 203 Veneering, and WMT 211 Workbenches.
His main interest is in furniture. He likes the simplicity and functionality of Shaker design, coupled with the subtle curves found in nature. His attention to detail and craftsmanship guide the construction of each piece. As he increasingly explores the possibilities of veneer, he incorporates it more into his work. He loves sharing his knowledge with others and helping them to explore new ways of looking at things.
