Jerry “Strawsteel” Haywood, the host of “That’s Good Stuff” Sports Talk Show, comes to broadcasting with many years of experience in sports, recreation, and community involvement. Of the many nicknames he has had throughout his life, “Strawsteel” was a special one given by an exemplary colleague in the City of Carson Parks and Recreation Department and former Falcon, the late Freddie Cardenas.
Strawsteel was an all-around athlete in high school and college playing baseball and football, running track, and boxing for the US Navy. He played semi-pro baseball and football, signing with the Southern California Suns of the World Football League. Strawsteel also won the Golden Gloves Heavyweight Championship in Washington, D.C. while still in the Navy and was then a finalist for the state of California as a civilian.
He has worked for nearly 30 years in parks and recreation in Compton, LA County, and Carson. Strawsteel has lead sports and community programs in all three municipalities and was a park director and supervisor in the City of Carson for 22 years.
